Microtrend: Fall in love with marble this season

    by  • Thursday, May 7, 2015 • Uncategorized • 0 Comments

If you think marble belongs to statuesque museum masterpieces or the confines of Ancient Rome, then think again! It’s emerging as one of this season’s hot new micro trends, and the highstreet is awash with the beautiful material. For spring and summer, I love the effect of a pale-toned finish; from large-scale surfaces such as wallpaper, to smaller tabletop accessories, it’s an instant way to add texture, interest and a slightly industrial touch to your scheme.

But don’t be fooled into thinking that marble only goes with tough, industrial schemes. BHS show how pairing it with greys and purples really helps to bring out the grain, whilst giving the material a softer, more feminine edge. Floral touches are another brilliant way to bring marble to life, or why not try iridescent fabrics to add an enlivening bit of sparkle? Check out the Manhattan coffee table and side table (above), for a surprisingly luxe look that works perfectly in a modern living room scheme. Prices start at £359 for a side table.

Indulging in this trend needn’t cost the earth, as shown by H&M’s adorable range of mock marble accessories (above). With ceramic plates at £6.99, mugs at £3.99 and tablecloths at £12.99, it’s a really quick and accessible way to introduce the effect into your home.

For a more deconstructed take on the trend, I love the idea of dual-finish accessories. Pairing marble with wood, as shown by the Lene Bjerre range at Occa-Home (above), gives the material a raw, rustic vibe. Hanging a range of styles and sizes keeps the overall look organic, whilst white tiles and aluminium accessories have a slightly Scandi edge, too. Prices start from £46.50 for a chopping board. See below for the rest of our marble trend wishlist!

    Hot trend: Horse heads

    by  • Friday, May 27, 2011 • Latest trends • 5 Comments

I was going to use the word ‘severed’ in that title but thought the animal rights people might be concerned (as they were with The Regrettable Glowing Rabbit Lamp Post AKA Bunny-gate)…

This resin horse head wall light is new at Rockett St George. What? Yes. I know: We’ve already seen horsey designs. (I think we called it ‘Equestrian Chic‘ at the time. How pretentious). In fact, ever galloping ahead, we covered this topic in 2009, in the mane. BUT. We were somewhat aHEAD of ourselves. The trend’s evolved. Think: The Godfather (Khartoum). Think classical influences such as the Trojan horse (Why not? After all, Roman and Greek architecture was a huge story at Milan this year: check out the new Intaglio collection from Zoffany featuring architectural columns and pillars…) Think wild west, pioneer, ranch style. Think…erm, chess. Yes! It’s horse HEADS that are all the rage right now…

There’s plenty of horsing around on the high street this season. 1: Dwell‘s new wall trophy horse head is due in-store this June. 2: But, if you can’t wait, you’ll find this silver horse head at Dwell now. 3: Next is selling giant chess pieces to perch on your mantel, including this horse ‘knight’ objet. 4: You can find horse head hooks, here. 5: And fun horse head magnets at Crowbiz.

Everybody needs good NEIGHbours: This striking golden horse head ornament is about to pop up in Habitat’s AW11 range. (And don’t even get me started on magnifying glasses. That’s a whole new post…) – Ellie

    RIDICULOUSLY beautiful rooms

by  • Tuesday, January 12, 2010 • Decorating and interiors, News, Stylish shopping • 10 Comments

Mmmm, I’m veritably salivating over these stunning new pics, from our friends at Fun on the Floor. Not only do they prove that even though dark-stained or white-painted floorboards are LE NORM these days, crazy coloured carpets can still be cool…they also confirm for me that painting your skirting boards the same dark blue-grey shade as your walls looks AMAZING if you’re brave enough to do it. But tragically, I’m still plucking up the courage to get rid of my white eggshell woodwork!

Now, don’t you just love it when your trend fore-casting is backed up by some good, hard, solid evidence the following season? Lisa and I were high-fiving when we saw these pics and clocked: an owl; a glass bell jar; an Anglepoise lamp; horses; antlers; Union Jack flags; and even Alice in Wonderland accessories (you’ll have to buy our April issue in March for this one!)

Pour yourself a cup of coffee and check these out…so many lovely ideas:

This is still my favourite colour combo – dark grey walls with hot Bollywood fuchsia pink and rich mustard yellow – grrrrr, baby, yeah! And the pink bike is DIVINE.

I thought I was over the whole Deborah Bowness books wallpaper thing. But this room looks fab with a whole wall covered in it, not just a measly strip or alcove. So perhaps I’m not quite over it yet! LOVE the rustic wood sideboard too – anybody know where it’s from?!

Mmmm, more dark walls and bright coloured accessories. We LIKE. The lamp in this pic reminds me of some cool paper-covered ones at The Hospital club, or the funky patchwork ones from Lisa Watmough at Squint. (I have an old lamp, some PVA and some pretty Origami papers all ready for my own attempt…!) In fact, while I’m on the subject of Lisa, let’s take a quick peep into her home. I bet her skirting boards are all painted dark…

They are! But her floorboards are white, so this lightens the look I guess. Erm, I don’t like to moan when I’ve pinched pics BUT check out the lamp wire in the armchair pic – eeek, stylist, hide that cable!! Anyway, back to the Fun on the Floor pics…and lookie what we have here…

More painted skirting boards!! It must be a sign! I love the red and grey combo here – so brave but OH-SO cool. Let’s finish with a pretty pic of a girly bedroom. I particularly like the heart on the wall in this shot just made of paper. Simple and sweet – and a nice Valentines idea! – Ellie
