If you think marble belongs to statuesque museum masterpieces or the confines of Ancient Rome, then think again! It’s emerging as one of this season’s hot new micro trends, and the highstreet is awash with the beautiful material. For spring and summer, I love the effect of a pale-toned finish; from large-scale surfaces such as wallpaper, to smaller tabletop accessories, it’s an instant way to add texture, interest and a slightly industrial touch to your scheme.
But don’t be fooled into thinking that marble only goes with tough, industrial schemes. BHS show how pairing it with greys and purples really helps to bring out the grain, whilst giving the material a softer, more feminine edge. Floral touches are another brilliant way to bring marble to life, or why not try iridescent fabrics to add an enlivening bit of sparkle? Check out the Manhattan coffee table and side table (above), for a surprisingly luxe look that works perfectly in a modern living room scheme. Prices start at £359 for a side table.
Indulging in this trend needn’t cost the earth, as shown by H&M’s adorable range of mock marble accessories (above). With ceramic plates at £6.99, mugs at £3.99 and tablecloths at £12.99, it’s a really quick and accessible way to introduce the effect into your home.
For a more deconstructed take on the trend, I love the idea of dual-finish accessories. Pairing marble with wood, as shown by the Lene Bjerre range at Occa-Home (above), gives the material a raw, rustic vibe. Hanging a range of styles and sizes keeps the overall look organic, whilst white tiles and aluminium accessories have a slightly Scandi edge, too. Prices start from £46.50 for a chopping board.
